Wall Construction Denounced

The Honduran cardinal has denounced the US plans for construction of a wall along the country’s border with Mexico.

Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga of Tegucigalpa said that it is ironic the North American Free Trade Agreement allows free movement of merchandise across national boundaries, but the wall is an effort to block the movement of humans. He predicted that the construction project would fail to stop the flow of immigrants entering the US illegally.

Speaking at a May 8 conference, Cardinal Rodriguez compared the border wall with the Berlin Wall– overlooking the critical distinction that the proposed border fence is intended by the US to keep unauthorized visitors out, whereas in Berlin, the Communist regime built the wall to keep its own subjects locked in.

Honduran Medal of Merits Awarded

Three Joint Task Force-Bravo personnel received the Honduran Medal of Merit May 5 for the work they’ve done in partnership with Honduras during the past year.

The Honduran chief of defense, Gen. de Division Romeo Orlando Vasquez Velasquez, presented Army Lt. Col. Gregory Jicha, Army Forces commander, and Air Force Lt. Col. Randall Vogel, the 612th Air Base Squadron commander, with the Medal of Merit First Class, and Army Maj. Mirt Nevill, the JTF-Bravo comptroller, with the Medal of Merit Second Class, during a ceremony at the Estado Mayor Conjunto, the Honduran equivalent of the Pentagon.

Flying Iguana a Success

A three-day exercises known as “Flying Iguana” took place for the 11th consecutive year in Honduras, drawing the participation of special operations soldiers from 17 countries.

The annual event, known in Spanish as “Iguana Voladora,” was hosted by the Honduran Special Forces and took place April 22-24 near the capital city of Tegucigalpa, according to a U.S. Army Special Operations Command press release.

The soldiers came from Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and the United States, and jumped from two CH-47 Chinook helicopters at 1,200 feet.

Honduran Attorneys on Hunger Strike

Members of the Honduran Attorneys Association are on a hunger strike to protest corruption that involves the ruling class of this Central American nation.

The indefinite hunger strike began in protest of a decision by the General Attorney Leonidas Rosa Bautista of firing or transferring or arbitrarily rotating attorneys prepared to try officials involved in 16 cases.

Representatives of the Committee of Relatives of Detained Disappeared of in Honduras called on the national and international community for solidarity in support of the attorneys on the hunger strike.
