Condolences sent to Honduras

President Nguyen Minh Triet on November 3 sent a message of condolences to President of the Republic of Honduras Manuel Zelaya Rosales over the losses caused by hurricane Omar that swept over the country in mid-October.

Earlier on October 31, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Gia Khiem extended condolences to Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shad Mahmood Qureshi over human and property losses caused by an earthquake that hit the Pakistani province of Balochistan on October 28.

Break in Rain, but not Flooding

The rain has stopped, but the skies over Honduras remain cold and gray. Intense flooding has killed 23 people, displaced hundreds of thousands and destroyed over 100 acres of bean and maize crops. Compassion International’s church partners have been providing food and shelter for sponsored children and their families, as well as distributing bedding, clothing, and food supplies.

The lack of a harvest coming on top of sky-high food prices has intensified the desperation and need for international aid. United Nations agencies and their NGO partners have appealed for more than $17 million over the next six months to provide aid to those affected by the flooding. These funds would provide food, shelter, health care, water and sanitation, as well as supporting emergency logistics and early recovery projects.

Weather conditions to improve

COPECO announced today that for the next couple of days, the precipitations will decrease all around the country with the exception of the north east part of Honduras where the rains will accumulate up to 35 millimeters of water in the next 48 hours.

According to reports from the National Meteorological Service, SMN, the rest of the country is expected to have precipitations lower than 5 millimeters and partially cloudy skies, with winds of 25 kilometers per hour, which will leave waves of up to 6 feet in both coasts; the temperatures will remain low at dawn.

Ship Battery

A crew member on a Honduran ship docked in Fort Pierce, Florida in the US has been charged with attacking a crew mate with an ax.

Fort Pierce police say Walter R. Bodden is charged with aggravated battery after the weekend attack aboard the Southern Relentless.

Police say Bodden and the victim got into a fight. Bodden allegedly grabbed the ax and hit the man in the head with its flat side before others wrestled it away. The victim was bleeding from the head and had two black eyes, but declined medical attention.
