Honduran Bishop Visits Pope

Vatican City, Jun 26, 2008 / 10:16 am (CNA).- Thursday morning saw Pope Benedict receive bishops from Honduras as they completed their “ad limina” visit. The Pontiff exhorted the prelates to continue their work to promote the truth about marriage in their country.

Recalling that the Honduran people “is characterized by a profound religious spirit which finds expression, among other things, in the numerous and deep-rooted practices of popular devotion,” the Pope noted that this character faces challenges. Most notable among the challenges are “the spread of secularism and the proselytism of sects,” Benedict said.

Eight minutes of rain cause floods

Many areas in Tegucigalpa and Comayaguela as well as street vendors from the different markets where alert yesterday afternoon when the rain started falling; and even though there where no material damages, the rain caused the flooding of several streets, electricity poles falling, and collapses of walls in these areas.

A spokesman from Copeco informed there was no presence of a meteorological phenomenon but everyone should take the proper precautions since the rainy season has begun and will continue thru out the rest of the year.

During all day up until 3:00 in the afternoon the sky was sunny but then the rain started to pour. This caused for most of the streets to flood.

Control Tower warned pilot about weather condition

The recording between the control tower and the crew of the Taca aircraft that crashed on May 30th, revealed the warnings the control tower made to the crew about the weather conditions at the Toncontin International Airport. They also informed the crew that the winds where blowing from south to north, the same direction the aircraft landed.

Most of the conversation goes on in technical language, but in several fragment the details of the weather conditions are clear leaving the final decision to the pilot.

Pilot turned engines off to avoid tragedy

The investigative commission formed by the Airbus manufacturing company from France, the Federal Aviation Administration Office from the United States, aeronautic authorities from El Salvador, Operation Technicians from Honduras and the Central American Corporation for Air Navigation Services (Cocesna) have concluded that Taca’s Flight 390 pilot Cesare D’antony tried to land in the middle of the track and when he realized this he turned the engines off.

According to the first investigations done by the experts the pilot decided to turn all the engines off when he realized they weren’t able to lift the aircraft again which is what helped that the aircraft did not catch fire at the time of impact and cause an even bigger catastrophe.
