July Brings New FTA with Taiwan

A free trade agreement between Taiwan and Honduras, one of the ROC’s 23 diplomatic allies, came into effect July 15. Ambassador to Honduras Lai Chien-chung and Honduran Foreign Minister Angel Edmundo Orellana Mercado ratified the pact at the presidential office in Tegucigalpa, the capital of the Central American country.

Benefiting immediately from the FTA were 3,881 items exported from Taiwan, a figure that represents 61.9 percent of all exports to Honduras, most of which are industrial products. In return, Taiwan waived custom duties for 6,135 imported items, representing 69.4 percent of imports from its diplomatic ally, the Bureau of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Economic Affairs stated.

Honduras May Join ALBA

President Manuel Zelaya assured Hondurans that his government is studying the advantages offered by The Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of our America (ALBA).

He said in a press conference that Honduras needs new forms of commercial association with more dignity.

Zelaya stressed that the country has been an observer member for four months of that mechanism, which is boosted by Venezuela and Cuba.

The dignitary clarified that mainly the economic and conservative sectors are opposed to the country’s joining the integration agreement, explaining they want to keep control of their monopolies.

Delta Begins Service to Tegucigalpa

New daily nonstop service between Atlanta and Honduras’ capital city starts Dec. 18, 2008

Delta Airlines will launch the first-ever nonstop daily flights between Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and Toncontin Airport in Honduras’ capital city of Tegucigalpa, starting Dec. 18, 2008.* The new flights will be operated using brand-new Boeing 737-700 aircraft being delivered to Delta this year that will allow the addition of service at unique airports such as Tegucigalpa with short runways, extreme temperatures and high altitudes.

Toncontin Re-opens

Business owners and airport employees awaited anxiously for the arrival of the first international flight type C and D from Copan Airlines to land at the Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa since it was closed down last may after the tragic accident of an airbus aircraft from Taca Airlines.

A business owner at the airport said “we are waiting for the arrival of type C and D flights as if it was Christmas”.

The arrival of aircrafts with more than 42 passengers is something positive for Tegucigalpa and its citizens, especially for those who depend on the economic movement that takes place at the Toncontin International Airport.
