Digicel Goes Wireless

Jamaica-based Caribbean mobile network operator Digicel, which currently provides mobile services in 23 countries and territories in the region and in Central America, has won a licence to offer WiMAX services in eight departments in Honduras.

Digicel secured the concession with a bid of HNL36 million (USD1.86 million), beating off rival offers from Celtel, Sercom, Lumelsa, Autoconsa and Axioma Empresarial.

Digicel already holds wireless broadband WiMAX licenses in Jamaica and Gran Cayman. In December last year it won a GSM licence in Honduras with a bid of USD80 million and hopes to launch commercial operations there before Christmas.

Still No Proof of Salmonella in Melons

It took a single news release to undo what it had taken the Molina family 30 years to accomplish. In March, the Food and Drug Administration sent out a global news alert saying it suspected that a salmonella outbreak in the western United States was linked to cantaloupes grown on the Molinas’ farm in Honduras.

Overnight, the farm lost most of its business as the United States closed its borders to its melons. Then the family began to field calls from jittery distributors as far away as England and the Netherlands.

Honduras joins ALBA

President Manuel Zelaya has announced that our country is already a member of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of our America (ALBA), in spite of the questioning from the different sectors of society about the president’s intention of incorporating Honduras to ALBA.

“Since we are already subscribers of Petrocaribe and we have been observing members of the ALBA, on this day the political decision of the government in search of solution alternatives to the historic problems of the country is to join the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of our America”

Petrocaribe Meets in Honduras Next Week

Representatives of Petrocaribe, a Venezuelan-led oil consortium that offers preferential financial terms on crude oil to signatory nations, will discuss in Honduras the possible uses of USD 450 million they will receive every year to revitalize their production systems, the Venezuelan official news agency Agencia Bolivariana de Noticias said.

Agriculture ministers from the nations benefiting from the agreement will attend a meeting that will take place next week in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa. Petrocaribe’s member nations receive over 20,000 tons of crude oil per day, thanks to the agreement.
