A passenger bus plunged off a highway and rolled 500 meters down a hillside in western Honduras on Tuesday, killing at least 23 people and injuring 19 others, authorities reported.
Emergency personnel worked to free people from the twisted wreckage near the border with El Salvador.
“This is a terrible tragedy that will cause mourning in a lot of poor families,” Carlos Cordero, the head of the national firefighters force, said in a telephone interview. “We are making superhuman efforts to rescue survivors.”

Two Olimpia soccer fanatics died after receiving two gunshots at the classic game between Motagua and Olimpia in the National Stadium of Tegucigalpa, the police arrested over sixty young men after one more was injured as the result of the chaos that was produced.
The deceased were identified as Gerson Lopez (17) and Omar Antonio Ruiz (18), and Jose Paz Rivera (19) resulted injured.
The death of Gerson Lopez took place on the bleachers after a confrontation between fans from both teams where the police had to interfere.

The United States beat Honduras 1-0 on Saturday in the CONCACAF Olympic soccer qualifying tournament, with both teams advancing to the semi-finals.
In an earlier Group A game, Panama beat Cuba 4-1.
The United States finished top of the group with seven points from their three matches, a point ahead of Honduras. Panama had three points while Cuba finished with a point.
Cuba had to play their last two games shorthanded after seven of their squad defected following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with the United States.

The general manager of the Honduran association of Petroleum Product Distributors (Ahdippe) Sarai Silva informed that the problem of the fuel supply shortage around the country is being generated by the petroleum distributing companies
“We have been reporting this problem in several occasions for over two weeks and we have noticed that a problem in the commercialization chain exists that has not been resolved”.
She also assured that the problems is with several service stations, the company Petroleum Product Distributors (Dippsa) has not been delivering the product orders complete to the service stations.
