Honduran Government Saves Money

The Honduran National Electric Energy Enterprise (ENEE) will distribute two million energy saving bulbs to the population, as part of a governmental plan to reduce energy consumption.

Rixi Moncada, ENEE manager, said that by means of that project, two energy saving bulbs will be distributed to every consumer for free.

With this initiative, ENEE and the Honduran Executive expect to save more than 7 million dollars a year and eliminate buying energy from thermal enterprises.

Moncada said the measure is complementary to others applied in the public offices to keep reducing the gap between the incomes and expenditures of ENEE, without increasing tariffs.

Honduras Wins

Hendry Thomas’ goal midway through the second half led Honduras to a 2-1 victory over Colombia in an exhibition match Wednesday night.

Before an evenly divided Honduran and Colombian capacity crowd of 18,886 at Lockhart Stadium, Thomas broke a 1-1 tie with his goal in the 63rd minute. Thomas was positioned near the far post when he received Amado Guevara’s free kick from the right wing and headed in a shot past goalkeeper Agustin Julio.

Melon Controversy Continues

The Honduran government says it has sent three top ministers to Washington to lobby against a U.S. decision to block its melon exports in the wake of a salmonella outbreak.

Honduran President Manuel Zelaya says the ministers of agriculture, trade and health will meet with U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials to tell them about the quality of melons his nation produces.

The officials traveled to Washington on Wednesday.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked grocers to remove from their shelves melons shipped by a Honduran company after a salmonella outbreak sickened 50 people. Honduran officials say there is no proof the fruit was first infected in the Central American country.

Distribution for “Hoy no Circula” start on Monday

The government has announced that as of Monday March 31st the distribution of the Hoy no Circula stickers will begin in different government offices so that this measurement can start functioning on April 7th.

The controversial disposition of the Executive has been questioned by different sectors considering this measure as unconstitutional since it restricts the circulation of vehicles, because with this automobiles with particular and government plates can only circulate six days a week.

The exceptions to this measure are the vehicles used by public transportation and production activities such as agriculture, farming and industries as well as the vehicles designated to ENEE, Hondutel and SANAA.
