The mayor for Esquipulas del Norte, Olancho, Santos Sebastian Montoya and his bodyguard where intercepted by unknown men and shot to death.
The double crime took place this past Saturday around 2 in the afternoon on the town of Jano near Esquipulas del Norte in the sector know as The Crosses when the now deceased was driving his car alongside his bodyguard.
The family of Montoya manifested they his crime has political motives since he because of his leadership was an obstacle for many people.
Gilma Aracely Zúñiga, the deceased mayor’s wife said that when they killed her husband he was on his way back from Campamento where he went to pay 52 thousand lempiras from a loan the municipality got from the Municipal Corporation to work on an electricity project.
She also said that when Montoya was on his way back to Esquipulas del Norte he and his bodyguard got in to his truck and a few minutes later they where in a trap in one of the curves but the criminals didn’t killed them then.
The mayor didn’t stop his car and a few kilometer ahead they trapped them again this time where the criminals got thru with their objective killing the mayor and his bodyguard, who died in the act. Zuniga indicated that the bodyguard was a person who her husband trusted and he was always with him anywhere he went.
The widow said that they found over five thousand lempiras in his pant pockets but the criminals did take a briefcase with important documents and a bank book.
She also said her husband was envied by many people and that’s probable why they killed him.
