Honduras to Import Venezuelan Oil

Honduras is seeking to resume oil imports from Venezuela after 15 years in a move that would further strengthen President Hugo Chavez’s influence in Central America.

The administration of President Manuel Zelaya, burdened by the surge of international oil prices, will start talks with Caracas next week and the idea is to make all of its fuel oil imports from Venezuela.

Fuel oil is used for electric generation.

“The annual imports from Venezuela would be between $750 and $800 million,” Minister of the Presidency Yani Rosenthal said on Saturday.

Honduras oil imports in 2006 were around $1.05 billion. The budget for this year is $1.2 billion.

Merchandize Seized

After hours of monitoring and pursuit the DGIC (Criminal Investigation) seized a shipment of medication and household items that where stolen from trucks on the highway that leads to the north of the country. The shipment was found in the community of Cerro Grande in Tegucigalpa.

A total of 133 stoves and a good quantity of medication boxes where found by the team of Analysis Unit from DGIC in two storage facilities supposedly, property of a Chinese businessman according to information revealed by the police commissioner.

Spain closes doors to Honduran immigration

Authorities from the Spain embassy announced their country has restricted entrance to foreigners so they suggest the Hondurans that have intentions to go away to work to that country to abstain from doing.

In the past years thousands of Hondurans have been forced to immigrate to that European country as a second option after the United States has limited to grant visa.

Honduras and Spain have an agreement by means of which double nationality is allowed; nevertheless this condition does not favor the entrance of Hondurans to this country as the citizens of that nation are allowed in national territory.

Over 76 Pharmacies out of business

Over 76 pharmacies that operated in different points of the capital have gone out of business and disappeared of the market, while 91 are in the process because they cannot continue competing against the big pharmaceutical chains that offer better prices to the consumer.

The president of the Pharmacy Owners Association (APROFA) detailed that there are 290 pharmacies in the capital and 91 are going out of business because they can’t find a way to survive in a distorted market in which those with more money obtain better prices.

When this happens there will only be 118 pharmacies left in the capital which represents only a 32 percent of this type of business since 2004.
