Ortega in Honduras Friday

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega will visit Honduras this weekend to discuss issues of bilateral interest with his counterpart, Manuel Zelaya, the Foreign Ministry said in a communiqué on Monday.

After arriving in Tegucigalpa on Friday, the Nicaraguan president will sign economic and political agreements, the press release says.

This is Ortega’s first visit to Honduras, where he will travel accompanied by several entrepreneurs. The visit will conclude on Sunday.

Ortega and Zelaya met in the Nicaraguan city of Ocotal, near Managua, after the International Court in The Hague set the maritime limits between the two countries on October 7.

Prison Break in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Ten prisoners shot their way out of a Honduras prison, killing an unarmed guard and holding visitors at gunpoint before stealing three cars from the parking lot, officials said Monday.

One guard was killed and two others were injured in the escape Sunday in Yoro, on Honduras’ northern coast.

“They were shouting and shooting everywhere,” prison director Martin Perez told The Associated Press by phone. Killed was guard Oscar Osorio, 26, who was shot in the head.

Hague Decision

The verdict emitted by the International Court of Justice in The Hague on a territorial dispute in waters of the Caribbean Sea with Honduras, highly marked the news week in Nicaragua.

The Court with headquarters in that Dutch city granted Tegucigalpa the sovereignty over four small barren islands located in the zone in dispute, while it endorsed Nicaraguan reclamations on an extensive marine zone in the Caribbean Sea.

Apart from how advantageous or not that decision can be for one or another country, it was calmly welcomed on both sides of the border granting historical connections to the event.

Honduran Students in Cuba

Zelaya met with Honduran students at Havana’s Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) and received a briefing on the school from Cuban Public Healthcare Minister Jose R. Balaguer Cabrera,Secretary of the Council of State Jose M. Miyar Barrueco and ELAM President Juan D. Carrizo.

Some 353 young Hondurans are studying at ELAM and will soon join the 461 Hondurans who have already graduated as doctors from this revered institution.

ELAM President Juan D. Carrizo said that 10,000 students from 32 nations are currently studying medicine at the institution, which has graduated 4,468 doctors from 30 countries, including 9 from the United States.
