USA : Safeguard Action on socks imports from Honduras - AAFA
Kevin M. Burke, AAFA President & CEO wrote to Matt Priest, Chairman Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements explaining his views regarding the possible safeguard action on imports from Honduras of cotton, wool, and man-made fiber socks.
Letter goes as follows:
The national trade association of the apparel and footwear industries, and their suppliers – I am writing to provide comments on the above-captioned matter. As you know, the AAFA is an active supporter of a strong U.S./Central American trade partnership.

In Latin America, Catholic priests and nuns are confronting loggers and miners from multinational companies on behalf of the poor. Host Steve Curwood talks with Sierra Magazine writer Merilyn Berlin Snell about her recent article, “Bulldozers and Blasphemy.”
CURWOOD: It’s Living on Earth. I’m Steve Curwood. The Vatican recently declared that it is becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral state, thanks to the donation of carbon credits from a reforestation project in nearby Hungary. The move follows the Pope’s call for the international community to respect and encourage a green culture. And nowhere is that call being answered more than among activist Roman Catholic priests and nuns in Central America. In Guatemala and Honduras Catholic leaders are taking on multinational loggers and mining companies on behalf of the poor, sometimes at the risk of their very own lives.

Next month Honduras will have a new Forest and Wildlife Law, approved by National Congress and setting up to 15 years in prison for wood smuggling.
COHDEFOR Former Manager Rigoberto Sandoval indicated that no law has been so widely discussed as this one, from which came more than 15 different versions and at least five reports over eight years.
The new Institute of Forest Sciences will replace the Honduran Forest Development Corporation (COHDEFOR).
Congress President Roberto Micheletti celebrated the consensus reached and said all the country will benefit from this.

The road less traveled is a way of life for Abrahan Gutierrez.
Having lived in Honduras until 2000, he now finds himself battling the cold weather of Wisconsin as he pours his passion for life into coaching soccer for the joint boys and girls teams of Valley Christian/Lourdes.
Gutierrez, 32, is not the type of coach who speaks in sound bites, nor does he value winning over personal development and growth. This is a man who believes there’s something to be gained from sport other than trophies that tarnish and glories that fade.
