An official of the Presidential Office in Taiwan has defended the US$305 million in direct loans to diplomatic ally Honduras, stressing it is humanitarian aid and not dollar diplomacy.
Director Lee Nan-yang of the Presidential Office’s Department of Public Affairs made the remarks after learning that Taiwan’s media had criticized the loan as “checkbook diplomacy.”
Lee, who is accompanying President Chen Shui-bian on a trip to three of the country’s allies in Central America, said the fund should be regarded as “humanitarian aid aimed at helping other developing countries accelerate national development.”

As a team that makes its home out by the Pacific, some members of the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Riptide will have to endure a 2,200-mile plus cross-country trip to Rochester to play in Saturday’s NB Zip MLL Championship Weekend match-up with the Rattlers. But that pales in comparison to the trek that will land L.A. defenseman Greg Bice in New York for this weekend’s festivities.

Choluteca, Valle, Francisco Morazán and El Paraíso in Honduras lost their first season maize crop.
Coastal areas of Guatemala and those bordering El Salvador and Honduras have had excessive rains which have proven beneficial for the crops in fruition there. In Alta Verapaz to Izabal there were reports of landslides and flooding causing death and destruction of infrastructure. At present, evacuation of the area, search and rescue, victim care, relief efforts, and damage evaluation are taking place. There are approximately 2000 people in shelters.

The Coordinating Office for Honduran Youth Organizations (COJH) confirmed creation Wednesday of a youth party to fight for more inclusive policies in Honduras to benefit this population sector.
Young people represent 52 percent of the Honduran population and until now, policies by the successive governments marginalize them, said Hermes Reyes, COJH leader.
Reyes said the idea is to push for a greater participation of young people in strategies related to security, education and production.
Among the requests made to Honduran President Manuel Zelaya are the concern for the illiteracy percentage and the lack of respect to the rights of young people in production.
