Global Fleet Station Completes Honduras Training

PUERTO CORTES, Honduras — The pilot Global Fleet Station (GFS) completed their training in Honduras, Aug. 24, aboard High Speed Vessel (HSV) 2 Swift.

While in Honduras, GFS had new trainers arrive from the Expeditionary Training Command in Little Creek, Va., and former trainers returned for another engagement of subject matter exchanges with the Hondurans.

“I was told if I wanted to come back, I could, [if] they needed me — I’m here,” said Construction Electrician 1st Class (SCW) Marlon Borjas, from Expeditionary Training Command, who is originally from Honduras. “It was a nice surprise to get to come to Honduras one more time, since I haven’t been here for about 23 years. The students this time around were young, but eager to learn and to put into practice the skills we provided for them.”

FIFA World Cup in Reach for Honduras

The stakes
One of the revelations of the tournament to date, Syria take on Honduras hoping for the win that will virtually assure them of a place in the next round. Wednesday’s last-minute defeat to Spain does not appear to have dented the confidence of Mohamad Aljomaa’s boys, although they will need to recapture the form they showed against Argentina if they are to make off with the three points.

Magistrates and Lawyers Protest

TEGUCIGALPA - About 300 judges, magistrates and lawyers took to the streets of the Honduran capital on Thursday to protest gang killings of 12 lawyers and judges in the past year.

Attacks on lawyers and judges by gangs have surged in Honduras’ main cities and arrests have been made in only one case. State investigators say they suspect drug traffickers may be paying hit men to kill judges handling cocaine smuggling-related crimes.

“We are here to call for peace, for an end to this criminal violence that afflicts all the country, even law professionals,” said Valentin Aguilar, president of the Honduran lawyers association.
