Nicaragua, other exporters say U.S. proposal to raise excise taxes will devastate economies

At the Grupo Plasencia factory, William Espinoza and other workers earn comfortable salaries by drying, cutting, sorting and rolling squares of tobacco leaf. But instead of satisfaction, the workplace is full of unease and dark humor these days, such as when a co-worker points out the duffel bag near Espinoza’s work station.
“He’s packing his suitcase,” the colleague said. “He’ll be out that door tomorrow.”

The protests in Honduras against the socio-economic situation and in defense of natural resources took a more serious turn Tuesday following the death of local teacher Wilfredo Lara, first victim of the movement.
In addition to protesting drinkable water, mining and foresting legislation, women’s murders, lack of protection for indigenous people and integral agrarian legislation, the demonstrators will go to the streets seeking justice for Lara’s murder.
Angel Gutierrez, a leader of the western Honduran unions, announced highways would be taken by demonstrators on Tuesday in El Nispero and Cucuyagya, Copan, where Lara will be buried.

Tens of thousands of Hondurans have blocked highways across the country, saying President Manuel Zelaya has not done enough to address poverty.
Teachers, laborers, indigenous people and farmers were among the protesters who massed in the streets Monday for the anti-government demonstrations.
One teacher was reported killed during the protest. Authorities say Wilfredo Lara was gunned down when a business owner fired on demonstrators west of the capital, Tegucigalpa. The businessman was arrested.
A group calling itself the National Council of Popular Resistance organized the protests. The group also opposes the government’s plans to privatize certain sectors.

Cayman’s Under–23 Olympic football team jetted off to Honduras for 10 days of high intensity training before they compete in the Olympic qualifiers in Cuba next month.
Cayman is grouped with Puerto Rico, Cuba and Bermuda and will play at the La Habana stadium from 9–13 September.
During the training camp they will play top Honduras sides Vida and Victoria under new trainer Carl Brown, the widely respected coach who helped guide Jamaica to the World Cup finals in 1998. He joined Cayman coaching staff a month ago. Vastly experienced, Brown coached the Jamaican national side a total of five times over a 23 year span and has travelled the world, working with some of the best brains in modern football. Sports Minister Alden McLaughlin was at the press conference at Owen Roberts International Airport to see off the team.
