PARLACEN Seeks to Improve Image

The Central American Parliament will begin a meeting on Monday in Honduras, seeking a common position regarding regional integration, and getting rid of an unfavorable political image, according to sources of the institution.

Honduran Deputy Roberto Martinez said PARLACEN should not be seen as a shelter for decadent politicians.

There is interest in changing the image of this authority, and turning it in to a dynamic entity, consistent with the peoples aspirations, said Martinez, PARLACEN vice president.

Honduran Legislator Armida Lopez reported that the migratory phenomenon is one of the main issues, together with Central American integration, to be discussed during the nine sessional days.

Warning for Zelaya?

Gunmen shot and killed Honduran President Manuel Zelaya’s chief bodyguard outside his house on Friday, the government said, a brazen attack in one of Latin America’s most violent countries.

Captain Alejandro Motino, head of Zelaya’s three-man security detail, was dressed in his army uniform when two men shot him outside his home in a lower middle-class neighborhood in the capital Tegucigalpa, the security ministry said.

Zelaya said the killing was part of a campaign to discredit his government, which is battling a violent crime wave blamed on mafia groups and “mara” street gangs.

Health Ministry Guards Against Dengue

Honduran Public Health authorities intensified epidemiologic isolation on the borders with El Salvador and Nicaragua, to prevent entrance of a type of dengue fever more aggressive than the hemorrhagic variety.

The measures are part of actions by the Honduran Public Health Ministry to avoid an increase in the number of cases that would compel authorities to declare a state of emergency or alert.

Epidemiologic Surveillance director Jose Angel Vazquez said the frontier closing concerned the outbreak of dengue fever type 3, still not registered in Honduran national territory.

Six Month Ban for Suazo?

Serie A - David Suazo has thanked Milan for their understanding in the transfer row which eventually ended with the Honduran striker joining Internazionale.
