Honduran archbishop says statistics don’t reveal the full plight of the world’s poor

His Eminence Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez laughs off the notion that he could have been pope.
“It’s something you cannot wish for,” said the archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. “You should be out of your mind trying to be pope. It’s such a great responsibility. Only if God sends it.”
Rodriguez, who was considered a top candidate after the death of Pope John Paul II, was in Corpus Christi on Tuesday as the guest of Bishop Edmond Carmody. He was the featured speaker at an event to benefit Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi, a nondenominational and not-for-profit organization that serves a 12-county area. A sold-out crowd of 850 was expected to raise about $500,000.
