Tegucigalpa, Aug 30
Honduran legislators pressured the government Wednesday to decree a state of national emergency due to the increasing violence that threatens citizen’s security and the country’s stability.
We cannot permit these crimes to keep us on our knees, the population must react positively,” said legislator Javier Francisco Hall in his motion urging the army to takeover the streets within 24 hours.
The legislators have called upon Security Minister Alvaro Romero, target of strong criticism and whose work has been described as poor by social and political sectors, to implement urgent measures.
Members of the Liberal Party consider the President of the Republic the only person able to resolve the matter, as his subordinates have shown great inability to stop the present wave of violence.
Romero insists there is a false concept of what insecurity means, although he admitted deficiencies in police work and agreed on the need for legal reforms.
Also Wednesday, President Manuel Zelaya called for a meeting with the Special Security Council at the presidential headquarters to analyze new strategies against the criminal acts affecting the nation.
