Hondurans Caught

August 31st, 2006 · No Comments

Ten men who had bused to Mexico from Honduras before beginning a two-week trek on foot into the United States were out of food and dehydrated but still trying to avoid contact with officials when some of them were spotted on the west side of town.

On Thursday, Aug. 24 at 11:24 a.m., police got a call reporting “two or three suspicious Mexican males in backpacks” hiding in a ditch, according to Lt. Roger Stinson. The caller said the men would duck down whenever a car came by.

“Our guys responded out there, and after a little searching found ten UDAs hiding in an irrigation ditch,” Stinson said, using the police acronym for “undocumented aliens.”

“According to these guys, they were from Honduras,” Stinson said. “They caught a bus to the border and spent the last two weeks heading north. This is as far as they made it. They ran out of food two days ago and they were dehydrated, so we took water out to them while waiting for Border Patrol.”

The men did not resist being detained and were turned over to Border Patrol for deportation.
