The UN Joint Program on HIV AIDS (UNAIDS) revealed Tuesday that Latin America had more than 1.6 million HIV-infected people and 140,000 new cases in 2005.

According to the UNAIDS report, 32,000 children under 15 years old were carriers of the virus last year. In addition, 59,000 people died because of the infection and 294,000 (73 percent of those affected) received antivirus therapy in late 2005.

The number of infected women has considerably increased in several Latin American countries, and the report put Brazil as the country with one of the most alarming figures, more than one-third of the total in Latin America.
