TTI INITIATES NEW CONNECTION TO WORLD WIDE WEB

June 22nd, 2006 · No Comments

Press Release – June 3, 2006

New microwave and fiber optic network installed by Tropico Telephone and Internet connects La Ceiba and the Bay Islands of Honduras to the rest of the world.

Tropico Telephone and Internet has created the first private communications link to La Ceiba and the Bay Islands, bringing high quality telephone and internet services to this affluent and growing region of the Caribbean.

The carrier and service provider, Tropico Telephone and Internet (TTI), has completed the first private connection between Puerto Cortes and the north coast areas of Honduras including La Ceiba, Roatan, Utila, and Cayos Cochinos. This network, consisting of a combination of long distance microwave and fiber optic links, will allow ISPs, Businesses, and Residential customers to access reliable phone and internet services.

This TTI connection was made possible by the latest in carrier-class microwave connectivity provided by Orthogon Systems, recently acquired by Motorola Corporation. With the current installation, the OS-Spectra radios are capable of providing over 100 Mbs of symmetrical bandwidth on the longest link of 110km with a 99.999% reliable. TTI’s inter-island links with distances of only 40km have transmission rates of approximately 200Mbs.

“This is a huge advancement for TTI and a significant improvement in service to the businesses and residents of the north coast and the Bay Islands,” says President of TTI, Charles Powers. “Everyone has suffered through poor reliability and limited bandwidth for years. The timing of this connection is critical to the booming tourism and manufacturing industries in this area.”

There are numerous ISPs, manufacturing facilities and businesses that have been waiting for this type of service. TTI expects that immediate sales will be in excess of 20 Mbs with growth to 100 Mbs in the coming year. This traffic will pass through the two international fiber-optic connection points, Mayan-1 and Arcos-1 in Puerto Cortes.

“The combination of the latest in microwave technology from Motorola and a network engineered from end to end for reliability allows TTI to provide service that exceeds all of our customer’s requirements,” says CTO, Andrew White. “With online UPS power systems and managed switches throughout the backbone, plus redundant fiber connections at both ends, the customers will feel they are plugged directly into the World Wide Web.”

The OS-Spectra radios that TTI chose for this link are the best available on the market today. They combine excellent noise cancelling ability, critical for water crossings and long distance connections, with throughputs up to 300Mbps. This equipment can also be used for non-line-of-sight applications. TTI plans to expand its coverage to Tela, Trujillo, Guanaja and many points in-between using similar equipment.
