The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) formed a new partnership with the Department of Defense to begin offering classes at the Enrique Soto Cano Air Force Base in Honduras.
The private, Catholic university will begin offering educational programs to U.S. military personnel and Honduran civilians who work at the base this month. They will be able to earn both undergraduate and graduate degrees from American and Honduran faculty members.
“You’ve got service members who don’t have the opportunity to take advantage of education while in Honduras,” says Vince Porter, dean of UIW’s Adult Degree Completion Program. “We are taking on-location and online opportunities to them.”
Military personnel receive $4,500 per year in tuition assistance from the government. Because UIW charges $250 per credit hour, their tuition can be covered by their military benefits, Porter says.
More than 500 American soldiers are assigned to the base through Joint Task Force-Bravo, a component of U.S. Southern Command. Another 600 local civilians work at the Honduran base. Soto Cano is located about 60 miles from the nation’s capital, Tegucigalpa.
Fifty-one students have already enrolled in the program, which officially starts June 12.
UIW is the only institution that has been approved to offer classes on the base. The university has similar programs in place in both Mexico and China
