New microwave and fiber optic network installed by Tropico Telephone and Internet connects La Ceiba and the Bay Islands of Honduras to the rest of the world.
Tropico Telephone and Internet has created the first private communications link to La Ceiba and the Bay Islands, bringing high quality telephone and internet services to this affluent and growing region of the Caribbean.
The carrier and service provider, Tropico Telephone and Internet (TTI), has completed the first private connection between Puerto Cortes and the north coast areas of Honduras including La Ceiba, Roatan, Utila, and Cayos Cochinos. This network, consisting of a combination of long distance microwave and fiber optic links, will allow ISPs, Businesses, and Residential customers to access reliable phone and internet services.

Two distinguished former presidents of Honduras, Rafael Leonardo Callejas and Ricardo Maduro, are joining a new commercial venture that targets the growing demand for communications and Internet service by Central America’s rural areas.
WiTEL, the new company that will develop this pioneering wireless network, has been created by QTEL Americas and AMLA Consulting.
QTEL has an established presence in the region deploying secure wireless backbones for government and corporate clients. Using its proprietary multi-tier, wireless broadband concept, WiTEL will establish partnerships with local companies to deliver affordable voice and Internet access across the underserved areas of Central America. By using 802.11 technology for the “last mile,” service can be provided for a fraction of the cost of traditional landline or cellular service.

The construction of El Tigre dam on the Lempa River, which forms a border between Honduras and El Salvador, has unleashed a wave of contradictory opinions. Some claim there will be a loss of sovereignty over natural resources, while others say the resulting reservoir will prevent another war between the two countries, this time over water.
The first efforts towards building this 1.5-billion dollar hydroelectric megadam, which would be 100 metres tall and flood 72 square kilometers, began three weeks ago. And border communities are demanding more information and greater participation in decisions on the project’s scope.

President Manuel Zelaya on Sunday said the United States’ move to indefinitely suspend appointments for Hondurans to request U.S. visas was “unjust, rude and arbitrary.”
The U.S. business attache to Honduras, James G. Williard, on Saturday confirmed Washington’s decision to suspend the visa process in the Central American country, citing a lack of confidence in its migration department.
The U.S. government alleges that applicants can easily obtain Honduran identification documents without providing the necessary proof.
As a result, fake documents are issued that are later used to help illegal migrants enter the United States, causing “a national security problem,” the U.S. Embassy in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa said in a statement Sunday.
