U.S. officials have set a Thursday deadline for Honduran and Nicaraguan immigrants to apply for a one-year extension to a temporary worker program. Latin American community leaders say thousands of eligible people have yet to apply, because they were expecting Congress to approve a broad immigration reform package. Migrants are now rushing to sign up, as the proposed reforms appear stalled in Congress.

FTA - Taiwan and Honduras

The first round of Taiwan’s free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with El Salvador and Honduras is expected to take place May 29-31 in Central America.
Officials noted that Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Chen Ruey-long, at the head of a group of trade officials, is scheduled to travel to El Salvador Saturday for the FTA talks.
In addition to El Salvador and Honduras, Taiwan is also scheduled to start FTA talks with Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic in the second half of this year, the officials pointed out.

Tegucigalpa Receives Fire Engine

World Emergency Relief (WER-US) has donated a fire engine to the Tegucigalpa Fire Department in Honduras. Part of WER’s continued support of Honduras and its communities, this latest addition to the fleet is a first response unit, fully equipped with a high pressure water pump, rescue equipment, and equipment for managing hazardous materials incidents. It formerly served the Strathclyde Fire Brigade in Glasgow, Scotland.
WER’s overall strategy for Honduras also includes a newly built, full service medical clinic operated by firefighters and EMT personnel in the heart of Tegucigalpa, the country’s capital. Later this year, WER expects to also fund a mobile command center that the Bomberos can deploy anywhere throughout the country.

Weekly Liner Service to Honduras

The sailing of the MV Hafentor V.83 on 24/5/06, from the Port of New Orleans will mark the inaugural sailing of Seaboard’s direct service from the Port of New Orleans to the to NCA region (Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador).
The Hafentor will join the Seaboard Explorer and Fortunia in providing direct weekly liner service to the ports of Santo Tomas, Guatemala and Puerto Cortez, Honduras.
The three ships service will also provide twice a week direct northbound liner service from the port of Santo Tomas and Puerto Cortez to New Orleans.
