IDB Loan for Honduras

April 24th, 2006 · No Comments

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has lent US$57mn to Honduras’ Marena program, for priority management of river basins, the director of Marena, Gilberto Guifarro was quoted saying.

The sum will finance the second stage of the country’s hydrographic basin protection program. The stage includes forestry protection and decreasing negative environmental impact on basins, including those on rivers Ulúa, Chamelecón and Golfo de Fonseca, as well as Nacaome river basin, lake Yojoa and El Cajón dam, among others.

Marena’s tasks include orienting local producers regarding the conservation of basins as a sustainable part of the environment. The investments made with the small producers is expected to produce positive effects in terms of agricultural production, thus enabling the producers to re-pay into the fund to finance other projects on a sub-basin level.

The program began with a US$27mn loan from IDB to execute the first phase. It kicked off in 2002 aiming to reforest river basins to prevent floods.
