Honduras Lacking Medication

Honduras lost millions of dollars in 2005 through the purchase of expired medication.

Health Minister Orison Velasquez said the 10.5 million dollar loss was due to three purchases this year by the neuro-psychiatric hospital Mario Mendoza.

The information emerged a few days after President Manuel Zelaya declared a state of emergency within the health system that has only 30 percent of necessary medications and supplies to assist the patients in 28 public hospitals nationwide.

More than 500,000 people, mostly poor, seek medical assistance in Honduras daily, where poverty affects 80 percent of its seven million population.

Bamer in Honduras Profits Rise

Honduras’ fifth largest bank Banco Mercantil (Bamer) reported an 18% increase in 2005 profits on the back of strong loan growth.

Profits were 155mn lempiras (US$8.20mn) compared with 132mn lempiras for the previous year, the company told banking and insurance regulator CNBS.

Net interest income grew 17% to 520mn lempiras, while non-interest income rose 15% to 226mn lempiras.

Assets increased 18% to 12.6bn lempiras at December 31, while performing loans grew 23% to 6.52bn lempiras. Deposits increased 20% to 8.42bn lempiras.

Honduras Praises Panama

Honduras president Manuel Zelaya said that the presence of Cuban physicians in his country is a great example of solidarity with his people.

“This is special support for us,” the Honduran president told Prensa Latina, shortly after attending the Central American Integration System (SICA)’s Extraordinary Summit, taking place in this capital.

Honduras and Cuba, stated Zelaya, established relations around four years ago, but solidarity has been always present between both peoples.

“We hope to appoint a Honduran ambassador to Havana in about a year, aimed at fostering bilateral ties and interests,” he said.

The strangest of goals often decide tight soccer matches, and Seleccion Ecuador can attest to the circumstance after its Copa Latina semifinal game Friday night.
What originated as a centering pass instead ended in the opponent’s goal, giving Ecuador a 1-0 victory against Honduras 5 Star at Ted Hendricks Stadium.
Carlos Garcia’s cross from the right wing deflected off a 5 Star defender.
The ball’s trajectory bounced off goalkeeper Richard Pineyro’s hands and inside the right post at the 60th minute.
