Hondurans Contest CAFTA

Unidad Democratica Party will contest in Honduras’ Supreme Court the free trade agreement signed with the US.

UD Legislator Doris Gutierrez said the means used to pass the CAFTA
violate Honduran laws and will affect thousands of farmers unable to contend the invasion of the local markets by US produces.

The locals will be unable to compete with the negative effects on the small and median farmer production and the entire agribusiness.

It will cause havoc for labor and microeconomic sectors as well as for small and median enterprises, she added.

Honduras Campaigns Against Glue Sales

Tegucigalpa, Mar 20 (Prensa Latina) Casa Alianza, a humanitarian organization, announced the start of the “Break the Circle” campaign in Honduras Monday to try to curb the increased drug-addiction of children and warning of the danger of selling glue to minors.

Jose Manuel Capellin, Casa Alianza director in Honduras, where poverty reaches 80 percent of the population, said an alarming number of between 25,000 and 30,000 children inhale adhesive substances in Honduras.

The campaign, addressed to urban areas, seeks that salespeople refuse to sell chemical products to minors.

Capellin said they would demand application of Honduran legislation, establishing sanctions for those who supply glue or drug addictive products to children.

Truck Kills Military Helping Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — A speeding truck crashed into a small van carrying a group of U.S. soldiers in northern Honduras. Two people died, and one was seriously injured following the traffic accident near the city of La Ceiba.

Staff Sergeant Matthew Walrod, 26, was killed in the accident. Just weeks ago Matthew Walrod’s medical skills saved a Honduran girl.

The 18-month-old had fallen on a large knife, suffering a deep cut. She needed stitches, and her parents brought her to the closest and best help they could – Air Force Staff Sgt. Walrod at the nearby military base.

Wal-Mart Has Big Stake in Honduras

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT - news) said on Wednesday it now holds a 51 percent stake in Central American Retail Holding Co. (CARHCO) and will change the name of the Central America grocery operator to Wal-Mart Central America.

The move further extends the world’s biggest retailer’s growing reach in Latin America, giving it a stronger foothold in the largely poor region of around 41 million people that bridges Mexico with South America.

The United States generated roughly 80 percent of Wal-Mart’s $312 billion in sales for the latest fiscal year, but its international operations are growing faster. Wal-Mart’s success in Mexico, where it is the No. 1 retailer, has also heightened its interest in Central America.
