NEWARK - A woman from Texas admitted in court yesterday she helped smuggle young women and girls from Honduras into this country, then forced them to work as prostitutes and dancers in bars in Union City and Guttenberg.
Elsa Consuelo Isuala-Meza, 44, of Houston - herself an illegal immigrant from Honduras - pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Joel Pisano to engaging in a conspiracy to commit forced labor.
Federal sentencing guidelines recommend a prison term of 30 months to 37 months for the crime, but she could receive less if she cooperates against other suspects. She is being held without bail and is scheduled to be sentenced April 25.

TOKYO — (MARKET WIRE)
NEC Corporation (NASDAQ: NIPNY) today announced that it has signed a contract with purchasers, which comprise of 17 of the world’s leading operators, for the upgrade of the Maya-1 Submarine Cable System. The upgrade project called ‘Maya-1 Upgrade #2′ entails the expansion of the capacity of the Caribbean submarine cable network from the current 5 x 2.5Gbps system to a potential 8 x 10Gbps, providing much needed broadband capacities to the region.

Tropical Storm Gamma caused severe flooding in Honduras and, as a result of the damage caused, Chiquita has had to make the difficult decision to close certain farms.
The entire region near San Pedro Sula sustained tremendous flooding damage from Tropical Storm Gamma in late November 2005 after receiving more than 22 inches of rain in 36 hours. Nearly 1,600 hectares of company-owned farms were damaged by the flooding.
At the Tibombo and Buenos Amigos farms as well as on a portion of another farm, the vast majority of the banana plants were under water so long that they died. Banana plants on many other farms sustained significant damage and will be out of production for several months, but they will survive - after the company’s commitment to invest in comprehensive repairs.

The proposed soccer game between the U.S. Men’s National Team and Honduras will happen if officials with the Alabama Sports Foundation are able to balance deals with the Birmingham Park and Recreation Board and United States Soccer Federation.
The Birmingham Park and Recreation Board on Wednesday offered a contract to the Alabama Sports Foundation. It agreed to delay installing artificial turf at Legion Field until after the game, which tentatively is set for April 11. It also wants the ASF to pick up any extra cost due to the delay.
